My name is Jennifer Ervin, but you can call me Jenn.
I'm a freelance writer and author, as well as a breast cancer "previvor-turned-survivor" carrying a mutation in one of the "breast cancer genes," specifically the CHEK2 gene, which was discovered through genetic testing.
My family history of breast cancer and the devastating loss of cherished loved ones to the disease prompted my journey of extensive research, self-reflection and self-advocacy in the face of my hereditary breast cancer risk.
After undergoing a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy, my post-surgery pathology report revealed that a cancerous tumor had been slowly growing undetected - even with enhanced surveillance - for years.
That’s when I went from being a “previvor” to a “survivor.” I credit my intuition and the surgery with saving my life.
I wrote the book Ripped Genes: A Practical Guide to Understanding & Navigating Hereditary Breast Cancer Risk from a Previvor-Turned-Survivor's Perspective to help my grown children and other family members not only understand my story, but also how they could potentially be affected by hereditary cancer as well.
Now, in order to increase awareness and improve access to resources that empower those facing hereditary breast cancer risk, I'd like to share my experience and the knowledge I've gained along the way by making this guide available for purchase to the general public.
One of my main goals in making Ripped Genes: A Practical Guide to Understanding & Navigating Hereditary Breast Cancer Risk from a Previvor-Turned-Survivor's Perspective available for purchase is to help make a difference for people like you and me - those of us affected in one way or another by hereditary breast cancer.
While we only represent a small percentage of the general population, there are still thousands of us who can lean on and learn from each other. Information and knowledge are empowering, and can truly help save lives.
To boost the impact, I will donate 20% of profits of this book back to organizations that work towards better access to genetic testing resources and awareness of hereditary cancer risk, as well as breast cancer research.

“Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. The author did an amazing job of gathering all the important facts (and advice) about hereditary breast cancer risk and sharing it in a way that is very easy to read and understand.” — Sue S., Beta Reader
